Managing Expectations

I know this isn't how most of my blog posts start out, and so you're probably thinking that this is by accident. But it's not. And it's also not a list of to-do things.

This is a time to not necessarily focus on the list per se, but to focus on the time it takes to get things completed on the list. This month is all about managing expectations.

Starting at the Bottom: Foundation

My niece helping me declutter. And much like her shirt, I am over it.

I recently brought my niece out to Los Angeles to help me purge and get rid of some things. Really, she was here to help me start the process because it can be both lonely and stressful. Sometimes, when you’re going through something like this, you just need someone there; someone who can give you a hug, make you laugh, or simply sit with you when it gets hard.

Going through these kinds of purges can be incredibly emotional without support. I knew we wouldn’t get through everything in the week she was here, but she helped me take the first steps. After flying back with her and spending time with my family, I came home and saw everything I had been avoiding staring me right in the face.

Me and my niece celebrating learning and teaching each other.

That was the moment I realized just how overwhelming it all felt and also how important it was to take this process piece by piece. If I looked at everything all at once, I knew I would shut down. Learning how to manage my time and energy became the foundation for my forward motion. I had to remind myself that progress doesn’t happen all at once; it happens step by step.

Narrowing Your Focus

Tunnel vision

Tunnel vision.

You may have 20 million things that you are focused on in the month of September, but you're going to have to narrow that down.

And the things that you're narrowing down? You're going to be purging as well, because everything we do or focus on does not require eight hours in a day. Some things only require 15 minutes.

Sometimes tasks feel so overwhelming or daunting that you have to break them into 15-minute increments just to manage an hour a day. That’s okay; give yourself permission to take small steps.

With that said, I’m starting a short YouTube series on time management, though I’m not naming it just yet. So if you haven’t already, hit subscribe today!

Not much is more entertaining than watching me frantically, fitfully, and funnily try to turn my mountains into molehills. Spoiler alert: chaos is guaranteed, but so are breakthroughs.

The Speed of Society

Our minds are not built for long-term resilience anymore. We live in a society where fast is best, and when you move fast, you lose the ability to absorb and release everything you have going on.

Without slowing down, everything piles up, the good and the bad, until it becomes a mushy mess. And instead of feeling balanced, you just feel… blah.Try my short meditation for balance and clarity.

A Message from the Universe

Full Corn Moon coming on September 7th. It’s time for the harvest.

So, if this is you, here’s what the universe is trying to tell you, especially before the Corn Moon on September 7, which is all about harvesting:

You cannot harvest from a fucked-up field.
I said what I said.

You’ve got to clean out the gunk so you have space for the greatness you’re planting. Every little bit of time helps. Take 15 minutes out of your day to do those tasks that you just hate. It will make room for what is great.

Three Things to Do Before the Corn Moon

  • Organize your thoughts

  • Organize your time

  • Do it
